Orthopaedic Surgery
Michael J. Kissenberth, MD received his undergraduate degree from The
Citadel and medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He completed his internship
and orthopaedic surgery residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He served a fellowship in Sports Medicine at
the Steadman Hawkins Center of the Carolinas and the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia.
While attending The Citadel, Dr. Kissenberth was named captain of the football team and received many academic and athletic awards.
He served in the United States Army for 11 years and was last stationed at Fort Stewart, in Savannah, Georgia. While there he
became the Chief of the Department of Surgery and Orthopaedic Services.
Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, he holds membership in several societies to include the American Academy of
Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Amercian Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Kissenberth is a Sports Medicine specialist
with expertise in shoulder, elbow, and knee reconstruction. He also has specific interest in shoulder replacement surgery.
He is the Medical Director of Sports Medicine at the Greenville Hospital System and holds a faculty appointment as an assistant
clinical professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He is actively involved in research and education.
Dr. Kissenberth and his wife, Karen, have 3 children. In his free time, he enjoys sporting activities with his children, water
sports, and exercise.
