Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas Reconstructive Knee & Shoulder Surgery and Sports Medicine Fellowship
NOW ACGME ACCREDITED

The SHCC Fellowship Program aims to provide a broad clinical sports medicine and shoulder/elbow experience for interested physicians. The program provides an opportunity for six fellows to hone their orthopaedic surgery skills and to pursue their interests in orthopaedic research. The program offers expertise in the following disciplines: shoulder/elbow arthroscopy/reconstruction; knee arthroscopy reconstruction and cartilage reconstruction; foot/ankle arthroscopy/reconstruction; and hip arthroscopy.

The SHCC program is led by Dr. Richard J Hawkins, who recently has relocated to the upstate of South Carolina after working for 15 years in Vail, Colorado along side Dr. Richard J Steadman. "Hawk" has trained over 120 fellows throughout his career. He continues to be a team physician for the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies and there is opportunity for involvement in those programs with spring training in baseball for some of the fellows.

In 2007, the program will include at least 11 physicians practicing in several sites within the Greenville-Spartanburg metro area. The SHCC's office sites are located adjacent to the Mary Black Memorial Hospital in Spartanburg and the Greenville Hospital System's multiple facilities. Each fellow will spend time both in the office setting and in the operating room with staff members in order to gain a varied, yet thorough, clinical sports medicine experience. The clinic also is developing a primary care sports medicine fellowship and each fellow will be expected to teach and assist the primary care physicians. The SHCC works with several area high schools and a university. The fellows will assist in weekly training rooms and help provide game/event coverage. Below is an outline of the sports medicine staff and individual bio's may be obtained at request:

Each fellow is expected to initiate two (2) research projects that may be subsequently presented at a national meeting and/or published in an orthopaedic journal. Clinical and basic science research efforts are supported by the Orthopaedic Research Foundation of the Carolinas (ORFC). Opportunities exist for collaboration with the bio-engineering department at Clemson University, which is located in Clemson, southwest of Greenville, SC. One to two months of dedicated research time is made available during the year for each fellow.

Weekly conferences, often held in conjunction with the Vail and Denver offices via the internet, provide education and insight into the diagnosis and treatment of upper and lower extremity disorders. Each fellow is expected to coordinate a grand rounds presentation, and to participate and lead discussion in journal clubs, wet labs, and teaching rounds. The SHCC hosts one to two national meetings a year, in which fellow leadership is required.
